Southeastern Spitsbergen
We got down to real business when wen came to southeastern Spitsbergen. The southern east coast of the main island is pretty much ignored by most ships. Well, you do need good weather, otherwise there is not much you can do there. We had good weather, a good skipper and some good ideas and accordingly some excellent days there, from spectacular scenery impressions to dinosaur footprints.
Edgeøya offered excursions into past times of pomors and trappers and a lot of walrusses, including some very curious ones. Small, remote islands often have got much more than one might think at a first glance: on Halvmåneøya, we found not only the famous trapper hut Bjørneborg, but also had a first class polar bear observation.
Who knows where Ryke Yseøyane are? We were there and had a thorough look around. We also managed to have a look at Stonebreen, not exactly the most frequently visited glacier in Spitsbergen. Tundra and more scenic views on Barentsøya were followed by the impressive currents in Heleysund.
