Gallery 1: the northern west coast

04-22 August 2019

It was a good start, with fine weather and calm sea in Isfjord, blue sky and sunshine. We made good use of this and made a first little walk already the first evening, on Bohemanneset. The next walk was a bit more demanding, on the little mountain Knuvlen in Trygghamna. Later the same day we saw our first walruses on Prins Karls Forland.

After a visit to a stunning glacier in northern Forlandsund, we went to Ny-Ålesund, Spitsbergen’s northernmost settlement. Last contact with zivilisation for a while! But not for long, we continued to one of the amazing glaciers in Kongsfjord, made a brief visit to Krossfjord and later, on our way further north, we made a little detour to a bird cliff on the west coast.

We were fortunate to have Magdalenefjord to ourselves, without any other ship, so of course we grabbed the opportunity to make a walk on Gravneset. Then we had a look if the entrance to Hamburgbukta is deep enough for Arctica II. It is.

Fuglefjord with its stunning mountain- and glacier scenery is on the northermost west coast of Spitsbergen, so then we continued on the north coast.
