Spitsbergen under sail with SV Antigua, 25 June - 12 July 2019
Photos and triplog
An intense 18 days in and of Spitsbergen – that was the idea for this voyage with the 3 mast sailing ship Antigua, and this is exactly what we got. The trip itself was quite unusual due to the heavy ice and weather conditions: the whole north coast of Spitsbergen was blocked by dense drift ice. And the weather: one low pressure followed on the other one, and a field of strong wind seemed to be glued to the south cape – a vital point of the passage to the east, especially for a not too large sailing ship. So it turned out to be a good thing to have regular updates on the weather report and some solid local knowledge! We played a good bit of hide-and-seek with the weather and as a result it was usually a happy combination of right place and right time for us. Every day we could enjoy stunning excursions in Spitsbergen’s beautiful arctic wilderness, in the tundra, in the ice, with glaciers, wildlife … you name it!
