Advent City

Early coal mining in Spitsbergen: 360° panorama images and background

Advent City, located on the north side of Adventfjord opposite the airport near Longyearbyen, was the site of one of the earliest attempts in Spitsbergen to extract coal on an industrial level. There are still some remains to be seen, such as the foundations of several buildings. Closer to the coast, there was a bit of machinery (steam enginges?) and there is still a wreck of a small vessel on the shore. At the bottom of the mountain slope, you can still see the entrance to the mine.

Advent City was used from 1904 to 1908. When the place was abandoned, the buildings were moved a few kilometres to Hiorthhamn for further use.
