Colesbukta was a small Russian settlement that was used until 1962 to ship coal that was mined in neighbouring Grumantbyen. Then, the mine was closed, for geological reasons, as they say. A few buildings and other remains can still be seen in both settlements, the remains provide an interesting area to explore and to photograph.

Some buildings and artefacts in Colesbukta (and Grumantbyen) are protected because they are older than 1946. It is not allowed to camp or to make a fire in these areas, including a safety zone of 100 metres. This includes structures that may be hidden in the ground.

Around 2010, the Russian Trust Arktikugol had plans to revive coal mining activities in Colesbukta, but nothing has come out of it so far.
