Longyearbyen - coal cableway

The old coal cableway („taubane“) is in of Longyearbyen’s landmarks. It was used to transport coal from the mines to the harbour. The first cableway was put into use in 1907. The system was finally abandoned and replaced by vans in 1987.

The individual installations of the cableway are prominent landmarks. Some of the pillars have been renovated to keep them from collapsing. This one, in a central position in Longyearbyen, is illuminated during the dark period. It was known amongst the miners as “Saudi-Arabia”.
