The old post office in Ny-Ålesund is not in function anymore. Today, the Kongsfjordbutikken serves as post office, where you can get stamps and send mail from the postbox on the outside wall.
Today, the old post office is used just occasionally, for example when a cruise ship with a larger number of passengers is in town. But it is open and may be visited at any time. There is not too much to see, but there are some stamps which you can use, for example to stamp your diary or postcards – but just the area where you write, not the stamp! The stamps in the old post office are not official stamps, they are just souvenir stamps and if you stamp a stamp with one of these stamps, then the stamp is not valid anymore (far too many stamps here …). The same is true, by the way, for other official documents such as passports …
Today, mail is sent from the post box from Kongsfjordbutikken. Mail sent from there will get the official stamp. If you send a postcard from there, it may arrive surprisingly fast, may even before you get back home … disappointing, isn’t it? 🙂
