Sassendalen is one of Spitsbergen’s largest ice-free valleys. In the summer, the wide, wet tundra is hardly accessible, and only a few well-trained hikers will then venture in this area, far from the coast, for example on the way to the east coast. But in wintertime, there is quite a lot of traffic, when this wide, flat area is used by snow mobile groups on the way to the east coast, to Tempelfjord or Pyramiden.

I shot this panorama years ago in early April in late night hours on the way back from the east coast. It was cold and it had been a long day, but I could not resist the temptation but just had to try capture the magic of the moment, the wide-open scenery and the beautiful light.
