Spitsbergen under sail with SV Antigua, 25 June - 12 July 2019

An inten­se 18 days in and of Spits­ber­gen – that was the idea for this voya­ge with the 3 mast sai­ling ship Anti­gua, and this is exact­ly what we got. The trip its­elf was quite unu­su­al due to the hea­vy ice and wea­ther con­di­ti­ons: the who­le north coast of Spits­ber­gen was blo­cked by den­se drift ice. And the wea­ther: one low pres­su­re fol­lo­wed on the other one, and a field of strong wind see­med to be glued to the south cape – a vital point of the pas­sa­ge to the east, espe­ci­al­ly for a not too lar­ge sai­ling ship. So it tur­ned out to be a good thing to have regu­lar updates on the wea­ther report and some solid local know­ledge! We play­ed a good bit of hide-and-seek with the wea­ther and as a result it was usual­ly a hap­py com­bi­na­ti­on of right place and right time for us. Every day we could enjoy stun­ning excur­si­ons in Spitsbergen’s beau­tiful arc­tic wil­der­ness, in the tun­dra, in the ice, with gla­ciers, wild­life … you name it!
