With SV Antigua to north Spitsbergen and to the ice edge, 31 May - 08 June 2024
Part 3: from Krossfjord to Longyearbyen
Lilliehöökbreen in Krossfjord
We woke up near the mighty glacier Lilliehöökbreen in Krossfjord. For those who have seen it over several years, the ice loss due to climate change is striking, but the scenery is nevertheless an unforgettable view, with mirror images on the water.
After a little visit to some breeding seabirds, we went to Ny-Ålesund in Kongsfjord, where we enjoyed both the evening in the harbour and the next morning exploring the place.
And then we still had walruses on the wishlist …
Walruses in Forlandsund.
Finally, we enjoyed some hikes in the tundra in Eidembukta – a strong, but lovely scenic contrast to the previous days further north.
Tundra, moraines and lagoons in Eidembukta.
An afternoon in Ymerbukta followed by a close passage of Grumantbyen rounded the trip off before we came back to Longyearbyen.
