In the end, the time left was too short for a circumnavigation of Spitsbergen, it would just have been too much time making miles at the expense of the actual experience, so we tourned around and went to the west coast again and south into Isfjord. But by no means just the way back, we continued the voyage just into the opposite direction, filling the time with beautiful and exciting arctic experience. We collected a lot of plastic garbage from the beaches, with the “best catch” (well …) in Woodfjord, this time. So now there are several cubic metres of plastic less on Spitsbergen’s beaches, and that is a usual routine on every trip, on many ships … good thing.
As I keep saying, Spitsbergen has so much more to offer than “just” polar bears, but of course, a good sighting (no danger, no disturbance) makes everybody happy. We got one one the west coast, near the end of the trip. Talk of luck. Not exactly a close encounter, but beautiful.
