Rocks with lichens on Hermansenøya.
Hermansenøya is a small island in Forlandsund on the west coast of Spitsbergen, between the main island and the long, narrow island of Prins Karls Forland. It is just about 3 kilometres long and has a maximum width of 900 metres.
Low coastal cliffs on the west side of Hermansenøya.
Most of the coastline consists of low cliffs. But there are several possible landing sites on Hermansenøya, for example at the northern end of the island.

Hermansenøya is a bird sanctuary, which means that you have to keep a minimum distance of 300 m during the period 15 May – 15 August. This is to protect the numerous birds that use the island during the breeding season. The species list includes a remarkable number of Great skuas.
From a distance, Hermansenøya may not appear to be very spectacular. But a lot of the island’s beauty is hidden in the details, such as the many colourful lichens that cover a lot of the rocks. Due to the bird sanctuary status, many visitors – out of the few who come at all – come in late August or September, when parts of the island may already be covered with ice or snow, which can add extra beauty to the scenery.
Beauty hidden in the details: ice and a feather.
he rocks, by the way, are schist and geologically quite old. Schist is a typical rock for large parts of the central west coast of Spitsbergen.
The highest part of the island is a mere 38 metres high, but nevertheless, the hills can provide stunning views of surrounding Forlandsund including Dahlbreen, a glacier on the nearby coast of the main island of Spitsbergen.
