Around Spitsbergen 06-24 August 2023 with SY Arctica II

Cir­cum­na­vi­ga­ting Nord­aus­t­land: melt­wa­ter and ice­berg near Aus­t­fon­na.

We mana­ged two landings on Storøya despi­te of pret­ty poor wea­ther, inclu­ding one at the hut of the 1980 Ymer-expe­di­ti­on (“Sta­ti­on Val­ter”), which now has its own litt­le web­site (click here) thanks to this visit. Good stuff. Not a place you get to too often.

And as we were alre­a­dy as far east as Storøya, we thought we might as well sail around the who­le island of Nord­aus­t­land, a decis­i­on that was also favou­red by the wea­ther. So we spent pret­ty much a who­le day just fol­lo­wing the end­less ice cliff of Aus­t­fon­na, which was quite ama­zing.

And then we still had time for some gre­at stuff in Hin­lo­pen Strait, inclu­ding Von Otterøya and some polar bears on Wahl­ber­gøya 😊
