A lucky trip around Spitsbergen, or actually around Svalbard. Antigua went all the way around the Spitsbergen archipelago, actually in 2016 for the first time ever. No ice anywhere (we would actually like some ice to be around here in the arctic, but that’s how it is currently) and the weather was on our side for the long journey around the remotest parts, giving us one memorable day after the other.
Spitsbergen’s endless variety in terms of stunning scenery, wildlife and bits and pieces of polar history kept surprising us day after day. It is hard to imagine a voyage more comprehensive than this.
We also played in the highest Antigua polar bear league with 43 documented sightings, probably on place numberone, including some spectacular observations.
For the first time, we made longer hikes with an overnight in a camp on shore. We did this twice, in the north and on the west coast.
The following pages give an overview of the various legs of the voyage. Click here for the triplog (German only).
