Around Spitsbergen with SV Antigua

14th-31st July, 2016

A lucky trip around Spits­ber­gen, or actual­ly around Sval­bard. Anti­gua went all the way around the Spits­ber­gen archi­pe­la­go, actual­ly in 2016 for the first time ever. No ice any­whe­re (we would actual­ly like some ice to be around here in the arc­tic, but that’s how it is cur­r­ent­ly) and the wea­ther was on our side for the long jour­ney around the remo­test parts, giving us one memo­r­able day after the other.

Spitsbergen’s end­less varie­ty in terms of stun­ning sce­ne­ry, wild­life and bits and pie­ces of polar histo­ry kept sur­pri­sing us day after day. It is hard to ima­gi­ne a voya­ge more com­pre­hen­si­ve than this.

We also play­ed in the hig­hest Anti­gua polar bear league with 43 docu­men­ted sightin­gs, pro­bab­ly on place num­be­ro­ne, inclu­ding some spec­ta­cu­lar obser­va­tions.

For the first time, we made lon­ger hikes with an over­night in a camp on shore. We did this twice, in the north and on the west coast.
