Gallery 4: southeast Svalbard
Arctica II - 04-22 August 2019
There was some talking about a lack of polar bear sightings, and indeed, „only“ one bear in 12 days half-way around Spitsbergen is a bit unusual. This was to change today. After a tundra walk and several thousand kittiwakes on Barentsøya, we saw a good number of bears in Freemansund.
This continued the next day on Edgeøya. Later, we did not see any more polar bears, so we could continue with our excursions on shore further south on Edgeøya. Golden autumn tundra and stunning scenery between Gothavika and Habenichtbukta.
On the south side of Edgeøya we ventured into „unknown“ territory, which is always exciting. Both the mountain hike at Tjuvfjordskarvet and the drift ice in Tjuvfjord remain unforgettable.
Then it was time for the long crossing of Storfjord towards Sørkapp, the south cape. The weather was almost too good to be true, and a couple of fin whales made the time just fly past.
