Gallery 2: Northwards, into Woodfjord
North Spitsbergen under sail with SV Antigua, 19-29 september, 2019
Initially the idea was just to break the long passage to the north coast up with just one short landing, somewhere, but then … it turned out to be two landings, not the longest ones ever, but great ones. Polar history in Virgohamna, harbour seals and a lovely group of walruses in Smeerenburg, great weather, great light … yes, good stuff.
We entered Woodfjord a couple of hours later. Mushamna held a surprise for us – the lagoon was already frozen solid, so we preferred to drop the anchor on the outside, as we wanted to spend just a night and not the whole winter there. Of course we went out next morning and explored the winter landscape. Then we continued with an excursion into Bockfjord. Next day, the scenic highlight in Liefdefjord was obviously the mighty Monacobreen, which is currently very active, and the hardly less impressive Seligerbreen. On Andøyane, we said goodbye to Liefdefjord – we saw a polar bear in the distance, a short sighting, and then we continued north- and westwards.
