Spitsbergen with SV Meander, 01-18 July 2023

Arc­tic foxes on Spitsbergen’s west coast.

Back on the west coast! We had had a good wea­ther win­dow to get around the noto­rious south cape, which is important espe­ci­al­ly for a small ship like Mean­der. Some eas­ter­ly wind was coming up and stay­ed with us for some days, a reason for not going into Horn­sund but stay­ing on the outer coast, whe­re we had a good time both in and around Ves­t­vi­ka south of Horn­sund and in Hyt­te­vi­ka fur­ther north.

We then spent ano­ther stun­ning day in Recher­chefjord. The sun stay­ed with us so it was a gre­at oppor­tu­ni­ty for some real­ly good hikes, inclu­ding Obser­va­to­rief­jel­let which has stun­ning views.

It was a bit of a sud­den depar­tu­re from Recher­che­breen whe­re some den­se fog sud­den­ly came in, but it was any­way time to get back into Isfjord again, whe­re we roun­ded this fan­ta­stic voya­ge off with stops in Ymer­buk­ta and Coles­buk­ta befo­re we made the last few miles back to Lon­gye­ar­by­en.
