Spitsbergen 06-24 August 2024 with SY Arctica II

Sce­n­ery in Kongsfjord

The first day was grey and wet, so we used it most­ly to steam nor­thwards to Kongsfjord, were it cle­ared up and we could enjoy the gre­at sce­n­ery the­re. And a love­ly polar bear sight­ing. Later it tur­ned out that the­re was no lack of polar bear sightin­gs on this trip, any­way. And we made a gre­at hike up on Irgens­fjel­let on Blom­strand­hal­vøya.

Sai­ling into Ham­burg­buk­ta – not by Zodiac, but actual­ly with Arc­ti­ca II – was defi­ni­te­ly among­st the memo­rable moments of the­se first days. And so was the hike across Dan­s­køya, from Kob­befjord across the rocky inland of the island to Krun­g­le­buk­ta. Some­thing I had been wan­ting to do for years!

After a beau­tiful sun­ny day in Raud­fjord – actual­ly the war­mest August day ever recor­ded in Spits­ber­gen – we lan­ded on Reins­dyr­flya on the rare­ly visi­ted nor­t­hern side and con­tin­ued to Pol­hem in Mos­sel­buk­ta, the last stop befo­re we sai­led across Hin­lo­pen Strait to Nord­aus­t­land.
