The first day was grey and wet, so we used it mostly to steam northwards to Kongsfjord, were it cleared up and we could enjoy the great scenery there. And a lovely polar bear sighting. Later it turned out that there was no lack of polar bear sightings on this trip, anyway. And we made a great hike up on Irgensfjellet on Blomstrandhalvøya.
Sailing into Hamburgbukta – not by Zodiac, but actually with Arctica II – was definitely amongst the memorable moments of these first days. And so was the hike across Danskøya, from Kobbefjord across the rocky inland of the island to Krunglebukta. Something I had been wanting to do for years!
Through Kobbefjorddalen across Danskøya.
After a beautiful sunny day in Raudfjord – actually the warmest August day ever recorded in Spitsbergen – we landed on Reinsdyrflya on the rarely visited northern side and continued to Polhem in Mosselbukta, the last stop before we sailed across Hinlopen Strait to Nordaustland.
