Gallery 2: the Northwest

Whalers and polar bears

The day began a bit grey, but interesting with a mental excursion back to the 17th century when the whalers haunted Spitsbergen’s fjords. Remains of whaling stations and graves in Magdalenefjord next to rocks which are literally older than the hills.

Later, the first polar bear sightings and more whaling remains next to an older trappers’ hut in the middle of that landscape that gave Spitsbergen its name.
