Gallery 5: Hornsund to Isfjord - Spitsbergen 12-29 July 2018
After some good sailing from Sørkapp up to Hornsund, it really started blowing there, but it calmed down enough the next day to make a shorter landing possible. It also cleared up so we got some fine views of the spectacular glacier and mountain scenery. There was still noticeable swell as we moved up to Bellsund during the next night, but once in the fjord again, it was perfectly calm and we could enjoy the tundra, stories from the old times in these places, the stunning scenery and some amazing bits of geology. Also those who were longing for some good hiking including spending a night in a camp on shore finally got down to business, even though the weather was not quite what we had been hoping for.
Things came together to close the circle in Isfjord, both in terms of our route on the map and otherwise. A visit to Barentsburg made our idea of 20th century Spitsbergen pretty complete, and then it was back to nature, back to the tundra and the ice, in Ekmanfjord and Dicksonfjord, Yoldiabukta with Wahlenbergbreen and a very friendly Humpback whale waved us goodbye for this time in Adventfjord, just before reaching the harbour.
