Longyearbyen, August 20-25, 2013

Some days in and around Longyearbyen can be much more interesting than some may think. Especially if the time is well spent with some good hikes in the valleys and up the mountains in the vicinity of the settlement. Tundra, rivers, glaciers, great views from mountain tops, flora in late-summer colouration, reindeer, birds … what else might one want?

And all of this, of course, in great late-summer light! Well, ok, we did not have great late-summer weather all the time. But we did have our nice days.

By the way, if you want to see the Dwarf birch, Spitsbergen’s rarest tree: You can find it in Endalen, on the west side of the valley, a few hundred metres only from the road up the valley.
