Spitsbergen with SV Meander, 26th of May to 3rd of June 2025

Part 1: to the west coast and to the ice

Meander, Hamiltonbukta

SV Meander in Hamiltonbukta, Raudfjord.

We made some miles to the north quickly because the drift ice gave the impression that it was moving away from Spitsbergen at racing speed. But it didn’t, and so we reached the edge of the ice quite early on this journey polewards from 80 degrees north. A wonderful experience! Less marvellous, of course, is the fact that the drift ice was already above 80 degrees so early in the year, at the end of May. At this time of year, it should normally still include at least the islands of Amsterdamøya and Danskøya, but what is ‘normal’ in times of climate change?

We then had time to explore the north-west of Spitsbergen and later Forlandsund.
