Gallery 3: Woodfjord

Wide-open snowy tundra and old huts. More polar bears and a big glacier

The arctic summer is still young in early July, the snow is wet and plentyful in the flat tundra at the north coast of Spitsbergen. But the weather is good and we can make an easy landing at Gråhuken, where Christiane Ritter wintered in 1934-35. The weather also paints beautiful reflections onto the calm water in the lagoon of Mushamna, but our long hike suddenly turns into a long, exciting observation of several polar bears. A first-class encounter! Maybe the glacier in the evening was almost a bit too much? But who would say no to such a scenic highlight under a blue arctic sky?
