Gallery 4: the east coast
We spent a long and absolutely great afternoon with countless little auks in Hyttevika on our way to the south. Then we went around the south cape – finally! We couldn’t have chosen a better day, the sea was flatcalm. Things continued to be perfect as we ventured up Spitsbergen’s east coast, so we could explore some fascinating places, landing at Markhambreen and in Kvalvågen. Stunning places away from the trodden path, that’s how it is supposed to be
But things were not what they were supposed to be at Barentsøya. We could enjoy some time with the ice, but then the combination of wind, poor visibility and ice got a bit too much, so we took off … life in the arctic! But who cares, it was time to get back to the west coast anyway and it would be good to have some time left there. We made good use of that “extra” time in Forlandsund and Ymerbukta before it was time to head back to Longyearben.
