Blom­strand­hal­vøya caves

Blom­strand­hal­vøya in Kongsfjord is main­ly known for the old marb­le mine Mar­le Island / Ny Lon­don and the beau­tiful sce­n­ery, but it has also some geo­mor­pho­lo­gi­cal regio­nal rari­ties in shape of seve­ral caves. The bed­rock con­sists of weak­ly meta­mor­phic car­bo­na­tes (“marb­le”) which has many small geo­lo­gi­cal faults (cracks). Water could easi­ly attack along the­se faults, main­ly che­mi­cal­ly by solu­ti­on but also mecha­ni­cal­ly, espe­ci­al­ly sub­g­la­ci­al­ly during the Plei­s­to­ce­ne when melt­wa­ter would run off at the bot­tom at the gla­cier under high pres­su­re.

Some of the­se caves are more or less inac­ces­si­ble, while others are easy to get to.
